Samsung Instinct

The Samsung Instinct isn't a smartphone by most people's definitions, but is still being viewed by many as a strong competitor for the iPhone. This device offers the features people have come to expect from a high-end phone, including a web browser, 3G, email, a GPS receiver, music and video player, and more. The Instinct is based around a 3.1-inch, 240-by-432-pixel touchscreen. This includes tactile feedback, called haptics, which allows the virtual QWERTY keypad to feel a little more like a real one. It is Sprint's first consumer-oriented phone with EV-DO Rev. A.

Apple iPhone 3G

With a name like "iPhone 3G" some have thought this would be the third generation smartphone from Apple. Instead it's the second generation, and the name refers to its most significant new feature, support for 3G cellular-wireless networking.

But that won't be the only change. A GPS receiver has been added, and so has the ability to run native third-party applications that have been approved by Apple. In addition, it will be able to connect to Microsoft Exchange for corporate email service. Aside from these, though, the iPhone 3G is quite similar to its predecessor.

Palm Centro

The Centro is one of the smallest and lightest smartphones Palm has ever offered. Nevertheless, it still includes a full QWERTY keyboard and a 320 by 320 pixel touchscreen. It is available from a variety of wireless carriers around the world, and is sold unlocked in Europe. The CDMA version of this device offers EV-DO, but the GSM one does not include support for 3G. Instead, the 2.5G standard EDGE is as fast as it goes. Features GSM 850/900/1800/1900, Palm OS 5.4.9, Up to 240 min battery life and 64 MB memory.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile smartphone will be the Xperia X1. The centerpiece of this device will be its 3-inch, WVGA (800 by 480 pixel) touchscreen. In shape, it will be a "slider," which means its display will slide aside to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. In addition, this quad-band GSM phone will have support for the 3G frequencies used around the world. It will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

HTC Touch Diamond

This smartphone is an upgraded version of the very popular HTC Touch, and targeted at the pro-sumer class. Like its predecessor, it doesn't have a hardware keyboard, but instead is focused on its touchscreen. It has a number of upgrades, like a VGA display, a 3-megapixel camera, and Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro. There will be both GSM and CDMA versions with 3G support, and some of these will include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and/or GPS.
